Two of the widely used field guide series are published by Sierra Club and National Audubon Society. In each series, each book covers a defined geographical area of the United States. Books in both series devote a hundred pages or so up front to describing climate, geography, and key plant species for each of their area's major natural communities.

The Audubon guides include color photos of every plant and animal discussed and give more detailed descriptions of each plant as well as descriptions of key animals.

The Sierra guides focus on plants and include black and white photos or drawings; they do not include a picture of every plant discussed, but they devote more space to the natural history of each area.
